The Carolina’s does not see very many bad winter storms, but we do see a fair share of below freezing temperatures and shivering cold wind gusts. This type of weather can either be very enjoyable or keep you very sick. Many of the children in school pass around colds due to the trip to and from the bus in the morning. Something as simple as standing outside for five or ten minutes can cause them to catch a cold and then pass it on to others on the bus or later that day at school.
Some parents tend to keep their children home when they are sniffling and this is ideal. However, sometimes they can’t be kept home due to the number of days that they have acquired. Even in this instance, their health should always be the first thing to think about when trying to decide if you should send your child to school. They will be touching other options, such as handrails, seats, door knobs, and more. Other children can easily contract the cold that your child has if they were to touch something right behind your child.
Keeping Our Children Warm
Thousands of homes that were built recently come equipped with central heat and air. They can provide a luxury in the winter and summer without having to go outside of your home. However, homes that do not have central heat and air take other means of keeping them cool and warm during the appropriate seasons. For two winters straight we lived in a home that was built pre 1970 and had no central air or heat. During the summer months it was not very hard to stay cool by cooling off one room and allowing the children to come into that room when they were done playing outside.
During the winter months we had the same type of setup but we had a heater in two bedrooms and a fireplace type heater in the living room. Before purchasing any type of heater we discovered electric and infrared heater reviews that distinguished our choice of what type to buy. The children had to have a safe heater in their room, but one that would put out enough heat to heat up a ten by twelve room. An infrared heater was idea as it would get hot quicker than the others and spread faster it seemed.
If they seem to have the sniffles in the morning, we choose to keep them at home. My daughter is a special case as a fever could send her into seizures. We have to keep a watchful eye on their temperatures and make sure that they do not become contagious. If we believe that their temperature is too high for them to go to school, we will keep them out that day and send them to school the very next day, if they are better, with a note stating why they were out.
The Spreading of Viruses and Colds
There are plenty of ways that you can spread a virus or cold and a child that is not educated with proper handwashing techniques is a carrier for these germs. When they use the bathroom, all children should be taught how to properly wash their hands, if not by their parent, by the school or their teacher. Many tools have been created to help leave a bathroom without having to touch anything after completely washing and drying your hands. These things can be found in some upper-class restaurants and some well-endowed schools. Other schools choose to just leave the bathroom door propped open to avoid the student from having to touch it when exiting.
There are different ways of helping your child learn how to properly wash their hands to avoid catching or spreading germs. Some parents choose to purchase child hand washing charts and hang them up on the back of the bathroom door, while others will make these charts with their children. It can turn into a fun arts and crafts project if you choose to make it with your child. They can even draw their own hand on paper and cut it out to paste it to the poster board that you plan on hanging up.
